Towing an Electric Vehicle
Setting off, and for some reason, you can't continue driving and need to tow the vehicle. Towing an electric vehicle requires special attention and precautions. So what do you do?
Anyone familiar with Murphy knows he always arrives at an inconvenient time. You're driving to work, on a trip, or to an important meeting, and for some reason, the vehicle doesn't allow you to continue driving. In an electric vehicle, there can be several reasons:
Battery depletion. In this case, the vehicle needs to be towed to the nearest charging station. A failure in the vehicle's software system, which may prevent continued driving. Not different from an internal combustion engine vehicle: a car accident, the vehicle won't start, a flat tire, and more. When the electric vehicle doesn't allow continued driving, the wheels and the gearbox lock in such a way that it can't be loaded onto a regular tow truck because a regular tow truck can't tow a vehicle when the wheels are locked.
Therefore, a tailored solution is required when towing the vehicle. So what do you do?
If possible, shift the gear to N (neutral), which will allow the vehicle to be towed freely and disconnect the engine from the drivetrain system. It's important to call a professional towing service for towing the electric vehicle. It's essential to mention that it's an electric vehicle so that a tow truck with a flatbed or a carrier that can lift the entire vehicle onto the loading platform without the vehicle's wheels touching the road and causing damage arrives. Another option is to use a tow truck with wheel lifts to ensure all four wheels don't touch the ground. It's important to note that this type of towing can be used up to 55 km, and it's recommended to direct the vehicle forward so that the front wheels are elevated and the rear wheels are on the lift.
