Insurance for a home charging station for an electric vehicle
A charging station is a device that provides electrical energy to charge an electric vehicle. Home charging allows you to charge the vehicle conveniently without needing to use public charging stations. Incorrect use and maintenance can cause significant damage to the charging station, property, and nearby vehicles. What is important to know?
When purchasing an electric vehicle and wanting to install a charging station, it is important that the installation is carried out by a certified electrician and to ensure insurance coverage against damages that may occur due to the use of the charging station. The coverage should include the charging station itself and third-party coverage, meaning coverage for damages caused to third parties by the charging station.
In any case, it is important to check with the insurance company what coverages are provided and not to rely solely on what is written here.
Installing a Charging Station
The installation of a charging station for an electric vehicle is regulated under the Electricity Regulations (Installation of a Charging System for an Electric Vehicle), 2020. According to the regulation, the installation of a charging station near the residence can only be done by a certified electrician. Upon completion of the installation, and before operating the station for the first time, an electrical inspection must be carried out by an inspecting electrician who confirms that the charging system has been installed according to the electricity regulations and guidelines and is approved for connection to the grid.
Insurance Coverage for the Charging Station
The purchased policy should provide two main types of coverage:
- Coverage for the charging station in cases of theft, fire, damage caused by a vehicle or person, or damage caused by unusual weather, etc.
- Third-party coverage - coverage for damages caused by the charging station to third-party property, including damage to another vehicle.
Options for Insuring the Charging Station
There are three ways to insure the charging station:
- Through car insurance, which will include certain liability for damages to the station, including replacement of parts or repairs to the station.
- Through home insurance, when the charging station is located in a parking space you own.
- Through dedicated insurance for the charging station.
In any case, it is important to check with the insurance company, as not all companies offer all three ways mentioned above.
