Types of connectors for charging electric vehicles

Just before buying an electric vehicle, it is important to know the charging options at home, in the office, and in public places. Types of connectors? All the answers | Eldan Car News

Thinking of buying an electric vehicle, or have you already purchased one? In any case, it is important to know the existing types of connectors. There are different connectors that fit different types of charging stations. Moreover, some vehicles have two separate sockets, one for regular charging and the other for fast charging.

Charging the electric vehicle is possible through regular-slow charging (AC) or fast charging (DC), each with different connectors that we should be familiar with.

Regular Charging (AC)

Defined as "slow" charging, it is the more common type of charging in Israel, usually through a charging station at home, in the office, or on the street.

There are 2 common types of connectors in Israel:

  1. Type 1 Connector - Less common in Israel. It has a maximum single-phase power of 7.4KWH. Most public charging stations support this type of connector. Home charging stations mainly support Type 2 connectors, and in such a case, an adapter can be purchased.

  2. Type 2 Connector - The most common connector in Israel. It can work with both single-phase and three-phase systems and has a maximum single-phase power of 22KWH.

Fast Charging (DC)

High-power charging, 50KW or more, allows the electric vehicle to be charged in a relatively short time. At super/ultra-fast charging stations, the charging power can reach 350KW.

There are 2 common types of connectors in Israel:

  1. CCS2 - The most common connector in Israel with a maximum power of 350KW. This connector is common in most new models, including Tesla vehicles.

  2. CHAdeMO - Less common in Israel with a maximum power of 400KW. This connector is mainly common in Japanese vehicles.
